iPhone 14: what impact for the refurbished market ?

The 14th iteration of the iPhone will be presented at the annual Apple keynote on September 7th, 2022.
Keynotes are the main events for the Apple brand. Always well thought out and calibrated to the millimeter, they accompany the marketing strategy of the brand. Steve Jobs focused on the structure, the vocabulary and on the demos used. He wanted to make technology accessible to everyone. Presentations on the giant screen are always simple and clean, getting straight to the point and show what it is possible to do with your future device.
Over the years, some of the keynotes have become memorable. We remember Steve Jobs' sentence "a stylus? but who does want a stylus?" when he presented the very first iPhone. A moment that remaines in the memories, because 10 years later a stylus was announced by the brand. We can also mention the famous "One more thing", often seen as the "icing on the cake". The expression has become a real characteristic of keynotes today. Steve Jobs sometimes had fun using "one more thing" to create the effect of a bomb. The Macbook Pro, the Apple TV, the Macbook Air and the iPhone X were all part of these "one more thing".
We then ask ourselves what surprises does Tim Cook, Apple's CEO, has in store for this new keynote.
Ever more expensive models
This year the keynote entitled "Far Out", will most likely announce the release of the iPhone 14, but also the new IOS 16 update, Apple Watch Series and AirPods Pro 2. A presentation that's already looking dense.
The new iPhone will come in 4 models: iPhone 14, iPhone 14 Max, iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max. There should not be a mini version. The "Max" versions will have a screen size of 6.7 inches (against 6.1 inches for the others). The new features of the Pro model will be largely put on the front of the stage: an "always-on" mode, a 48 megapixel camera with a larger sensor, an improved A16 chip and a screen without notches.
Rising prices year after year
A new price record should be reached, as rumors say that the iPhone 14 should have a price increase of 100€ compared to the previous model. It's the most high-end models with the most memory that are seeing their prices soar. The mini series offered by the brand, in particular, did not exceed the €900 mark.
The evolution of Apple's prices is drastic, especially when you know that the very first iPhone, launched in 2007, was priced at 399€ in France. At the time, the model was not selling well and had a lot of technical problems.
If the rumor of a 100€ increase compared to the iPhone 13 turns out to be true, it will then be necessary to count at least 1 009€ in France to get this new model. However, if the brand removes the mini version in favor of a mobile larger than the standard iPhone 14, as rumors indicate, it is also possible that the entry-level model is maintained around 900 €. To be continued!
Buy an iPhone without spending a fortune
Usually after the release of a new iPhone, the prices of previous models drop sharply. As users start to upgrade their phones, many devices in good condition invade the secondary market. The more popular a new iPhone is, the more previous models will get a second life as used or refurbished devices.
The solution to enjoy a smartphone at a good price without abandoning technology is to turn to refurbished products.
When you decide to buy an iPhone 13 twelve months after its release, for example, the price difference between the new and the refurbished version is still not very significant. So the new iPhone 13 128GB is sold for 749£ at Apple and its second hand version in September 2022 will be available from 599,9£ at our partner Back Market.
On the other hand, if you go for a model that has been out for at least two years, the price difference will be much more advantageous. A brand new 128GB iPhone 12 is sold at 699£ on the Apple Store, while its refurbished version sold by our partner Back Market will be available from 430,90£.
A seasonality to be taken into account
When you decide to buy a refurbished product, the time of the year when you buy it will also be important. Some periods are more favorable to a decrease in the prices of high tech products. At Dipli, we have created our barometer allowing you to follow the evolution of prices over the whole year and therefore to make your purchase at the best time.

What about technology ?
It's known today that functionality, innovations and features stagnate from one year to the next. Taking this into account, it is much more interesting for a user to go for a refurbished model 12 than for a new one. We let you see for yourself.
When it comes to changing your smartphone, it's always good to know that it's possible to resell it. Platforms allow consumers to compare and select the best offer to buy their cell phone instantly. Have you ever thought about this solution ?
Refurbishement and its benefits
All smartphones that are put back on the secondary market are tested beforehand. No less than 30 test points are used to carry out any repairs and to ensure that the product is as close to new as possible. These tests also certify that the device is suitable for resale.
The phones are also graded according to precise and realistic criteria that give a quick idea of the aesthetic state of the device. In no case does a grade judge the technical or functional aspect of the equipment. At Dipli, we have developed our own grades, according to our specifications, to provide a constant quality and a verified traceability whatever the origin of the stock to all our partners.
Personal data is of course completely erased. This is an essential step that is carried out by our partners and managed via software that complies with the European regulation on data protection and privacy (RGDP): Blancco , NSYS Group, Piceasoft, etc. This process ensures the security of all users.
As you can see, the release of the iPhone 14 is a major event for Apple. This release also impacts the refurbished market, as previous models already on the refurbished market are seeing their prices drop. In addition to benefiting financially, users who turn to the secondary market prevent the extraction of 76.2kg of raw materials and the emission of 24.6kg of CO2 per new smartphone not manufactured.
Good to know: in the case of buying a new smartphone, it is estimated that one would have to wait a minimum of 24 months to renew it. Once on the circular market, the use of the renewed smartphone for two more years will limit its ecological footprint.
